Does the alien see earth’s past as he’s heading away from us because the light is taking longer to get to him?

I am not totally convinced by this relativistic reasoning of past and future being real just like present. How can we see future of something which hadn’t happened before? Is that mean the future is pre-deterministic rather than probabilistic?

SHOUVIK MONDAL I am having problems with this too, but I found this. When there are very long distances involved, RELATIVITY OF SIMULTANEITY becomes viable and past present and future can move differently as the NOW PLANE is tilted on a hyperbola. That’s basically what Brian said, but I found it easier to understand using an image of a hyperbola. I hope the image I’ve included shows up. If the notion of velocity is replaced with rapidity, and the ordinary sense of simultaneity becomes dependent on hyperbolic orthogonality, time can more easily be recognized as both forward and backwards when the NOW PLANE is tilted on the hyperbola. The picture of past and future which I found with a Google search for hyperbolic orthogonality really helped me to understand even though it’s basically what Brian showed in his very impressive graphic. There is a lot more math at this site that may help you understand how the alien can reverse directions and go from past to future, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapidity. I registered for this course specifically because I’m hoping Brian will include a more detail explanation.

Oh my! I have the desire to understand this, but I don’t yet. I will keep plugging at it.

I need help understanding why direction of motion either away or towards equals past or future. How do we know someone traveling towards you has a “now” equal to your future?

This was enlightening. Quantum reality makes accepting notions like this easier. Time is a measuring instrument created by humanity, and a handicap in many scientific discoveries. In due time, we shall overcome our self imposed boundaries. Every course associated with World Science Festival is a huge use of valued time. I am truly grateful for these informative courses, and the many informative YouTube videos. ????????

Time is it all happens in the eternal now.
Whether that is also an illusion.
