Fundamentally, and physically, not much at all. The microcosm to the macrocosm, we are all subatomic particles in motion. Life is action, motion, spooky action at a distance and swirling planets within us all. We are the cosmos and the cosmos are us. When we die, our skin suits might return to the Earth that we are made of, but of fundamental constituents return to the star dust they came from, to the cosmic consciousness.

What the patterns are is easier than understanding the rules that make it so. The rules would be like understanding the meaning of life, or something akin to that level of magnitude in the world of science. The rules, the “How” things tick, that’s the bread and butter of physics. The “Why” is left to philosophers and the line of this understanding is blurring.

I think that life cannot really be defined without getting into consciousness. Not individualistic but a more collective, universal, or perhaps even cosmic sense. Everything is made of information and even those things that are lifeless contain some form of atomic structure, not too different from living things. Perhaps a better pursuit than defining life, we might possibly define what matters most. Those who are dead and gone leave an echo of the lives they lived, the people they affected, the ones they pissed off. All those lives touched have been influenced by those dead and gone, in ways that will continue to shape us individually and collectively. Love is not always the answer when you consider organizations like NAMBLA existing so maybe we should focus on defining “love” instead.
