  • Prof. Greene says “time itself slows down”, and he mentions the term “time itself” more than once. But, if time is relative, there is no such thing as “time itself”. According to Relativity Theory, “time itself” does not exist. What exists is relative time only.

I don’t think that the future has a “real” existence now if by “real” we mean what we are familiar with in our reality. However, the future might exist in a very different form that can be envisioned only at speeds close to the speed of light. Put differently, the future might exist in a different “dimension” or a set of dimensions of reality that is not accessible to us. These dimensions might exist but, if they do, they are not “real” in the ordinary sense of the word.

Yes, it is a mind-shocking phenomenon.

I generally prefer to know where did the formula come from before I start using it. Understanding comes before calculation. But I can cope with it …

Although the two perspectives, that of the pole and that of the barn, have different measurements of the each other, they agree on their differences. That is, the observer in the pole’s frame agrees that the observer in the barn’s frame will measure the pole to be shorter than it is in the pole’s frame. The opposite is true with respect to the barn.

Now, if the dynamite is fixed to the barn, then the pole will fit the barn from the barn’s perspective, and the observer in the pole’s frame knows this. Hence, the dynamite will explode, and both observers agree it will (at least before the explosion). Alternatively, if the dynamite is fixed to the pole, then it will not explode, and both observers will agree on this.
