Particle Accelerators

The main principle behind particle accelerators is that electromagnetic fields accelerate huge numbers of charged particles into detectors.
A major advance in accelerator technology was to accelerate particles into each other, using machines called colliders. The resultant pieces from the collision are then collected by detectors.
On the order of one billion events per second occur within accelerators.
The Higgs Boson occurs in collisions very rarely, in only around one in ten trillion of such collisions.
