12.2 Time Travel Calculation
demonstration
demonstration

This demonstration shows how much time elapses on Earth during a rocket’s one-year journey. Use the slider to choose the speed of the spaceship. The ship’s captain undertakes a roundtrip journey into space and back to Earth that, according to her, takes one year. Notice that when $v$ gets close to $c$, the discrepancy between the elapsed time on Earth and the elapsed time on the rocket grows significantly larger.
