Below is an example of the vibrations of a protein (the protein 194l, an enzyme, lysozyme):

Listen to the sound file and study the vibrational patterns of this sound plotted above. Select the answer that you believe best describes what is going on, specifically how the vibrations can best be described.
- 1. The concept of a sine wave to describe sound really doesn’t work here, and we need to think about a whole new concept altogether.
- 2. Instead of using a single sine wave, let’s use a collection of sine waves, each at a different frequency and with a different amplitude. I think that by using a collection of sine waves we should be able to approximate any complex, real-world sound.
- 3. We should try to determine the frequency of a sine wave that best approximates the real-world data. While not perfect, this can allow us to use the concept of sine waves to describe sound.
