Integrated Information Theory (IIT) is a leading theory of consciousness developed by neuroscientist Giulio Tononi. It seeks to explain what consciousness is and how it arises from the physical processes in the brain. IIT provides both a quantitative and qualitative framework for understanding consciousness and attempts to answer two key questions: What is consciousness? and Why does consciousness exist in some systems but not others?
The neural correlates of consciousness (NCC) refer to the specific brain structures and processes that are directly linked to conscious experience. Identifying these correlates is a central goal of neuroscience, as understanding the brain’s physical mechanisms that give rise to consciousness could help unravel the mystery of how subjective awareness emerges from neural activity.

While much progress has been made in mapping the neural processes associated with consciousness, the central mystery of how subjective experience arises from these processes remains a major challenge.

It is a concept deeply embedded in philosophy, ethics, religion, and even science, and it deals with the question of whether humans have true autonomy in their actions.
BCIs will continue to revolutionize healthcare, particularly in helping patients with neurological disorders, such as paralysis, ALS, and stroke. Future BCIs could restore mobility to individuals through prosthetic limbs controlled by brain signals or enable communication for those with locked-in syndrome. The integration of AI will allow for more precise and personalized rehabilitation programs.
