Compared with resting block, to the stationary observer, i) the moving block volume will appear to be less and ii) the moving block mass will appear to be more, hence iii) the moving block density will appear to be higher because of both of these effects.
August 24, 2020 at 11:33 amWhat if this is a closed universe and Gracie just does a 1-direction lap
August 24, 2020 at 11:08 amNo paradox. The pole will either always explode or always not explode for a fixed configuration of the (non-quantum, non Schrodinger Cat) system. For example if the relative pole length detector is on the pole itself then it will not explode. If the relative pole length detector is with the stationary observer then the pole will explode or be detonated (after suitable signal delay).
August 24, 2020 at 10:47 amIf it is a traditional speed train then no perceived differences and the mountain and train will look the same to both observers.
However if the train is travelling close to the speed of light (e.g. due to new teleport/ warp drive technology?) then George should see a fixed length train and more Isosceles mountain with acuter peak angle. Meanwhile you on the platform will still see an Equilateral shaped mountain but with a length contracted train compared to the stationary equivalent.
August 19, 2020 at 2:13 pmYes, except that this then raises the question of what “exist” means in this context i.e. is it more specific than being in the wave function of the universe?
August 17, 2020 at 1:55 pmDoes time dilation provide a way to live longer? Not practically or from one’s own subjective perspective unfortunately.
August 11, 2020 at 3:54 pmYes, something even stranger- the appearance of OU physics Lecturers in their pioneering 1970s tv broadcasts 🙂
August 11, 2020 at 2:42 pmYes a Foucault-type pendulum will illustrate the turning of the earth. Good natural examples include cathedral chandeliers as in Oxford Cathedral.
August 7, 2020 at 6:22 amWhat would it take for you to consider an artificial intelligence conscious and capable of receiving human rights?
Societal concensus and change in the laws, following persuasive new evidence. They would not necessarily be human rights but something analogous in the rights spectrum.Do you believe that computers can ever be conscious?
Yes, because for example one might create a computer out of brain matter or brains or integrate brains and computers.Do you think we will be able to create artificial consciousness without understanding the physical basis of our own consciousness?
This is possible because we have often been able to create something e.g. fire without at the time understanding its physical basis. We have also been able to expand consciousness historically through psychotropic drugs without at the time understanding the physical basis.August 7, 2020 at 5:20 amYes this is a problem because there is inevitable noise and error in mapping anyone’s subjective experience and feelings on to precise objective data. This is further compounded by the individuality of people’s experience, history and brain wiring.
August 6, 2020 at 4:29 pmConsciousness means feeling the ghost in your own machine…
August 6, 2020 at 3:58 pmAlternatively can we ever be sure that it is an illusion?
