    To detect life on distant exoplanets, astronomers will look for biosignatures, byproducts of biology that are detectable in a planet’s atmosphere

    t’s hard to say that there surely is life in planet far away from earth. We cannot take samples, and if many light years away, there is that time difference too. If planet which we are studying is say thousand light years away, it takes thousand years to light to travel from there to reach us.

    I don’t believe it is right to strike off gaseous planets while not having a fundamental definition for life. However, resources and time can be better spent on habitable planets rather than gaseous and inhabitable ones.

    It is quite possible that a thing as complex as life has some qualities that could yet surprise us and redefine our understanding. What we try to consider is life similar to the one on Earth and even with the NASA’s definition there could be different types of systems and organisms, based on different chemistry, or adhering to separate set of rules.
